German outlet 3Druck, which covered the teaser the same day, flagged the same hole — no technical data, details promised for September 2026 — and made the framing explicit: Bambu had offered laser functions only as an expansion module for printers like the H2D and H2S, and the R1 is its first dedicated device.
3D Printing Cost Calculator, which tracked the rollout, reports the teaser went out across three Bambu channels — X, r/BambuLab and the company forum — and that the render shows a single beam cutting Bambu’s four-square logo clean through a light wood board.
That render is the closest thing to a specification anyone has right now. Slicing a logo through the full thickness of a board is a cutting claim, not an engraving one — and cutting is exactly where diode lasers stop being cheap.
The bar Bambu has already set for itself
Bambu is not new to lasers; it has just never sold one as its own machine. Bambu’s laser module listing offers two options, both 455 nm blue semiconductor diodes, starting at €269, for the H2D, H2C and H2S — with the caveat that the H2S takes the 10W only.

Both modules ship with air assist, a chamber flame sensor, and contactless height mapping via an 850 nm infrared laser so the machine can track curved surfaces. The module alone is rated Class 4; sealed inside an H2 enclosure, the overall rating drops to Class 1 — the difference between “do not look at this” and “safe to sit on a desk”.
The catch is the entry ticket. Buying into Bambu’s laser today means buying a printer first: the EU store lists the H2D from €1,549, with the H2D Laser Full Combo at €2,149. If you only ever wanted to cut plywood, that is a lot of dual-extrusion 3D printer you didn’t ask for.
Why a separate box is a bigger move than it looks
Splitting the laser out of the printer changes who Bambu is selling to. A module is an upsell to people who already bought in. A standalone engraver is a first purchase — and it lands in a category Bambu has never competed in directly, against xTool, Glowforge and Creality’s Falcon line, all of which have spent years building out laser-specific software, material libraries and safety enclosures.

A laser that plugs into that ecosystem on day one starts from a different place than a machine that ships with a bare slicer and a forum. Whether Bambu treats laser projects as first-class citizens on MakerWorld is arguably the more interesting question than wattage.
The counter-argument is already loud on Bambu’s own forum, where the reaction leans towards “focus on what you have”. The lineup has expanded fast — A-, P- and H-series printers, AMS variants, now a laser — and a chunk of the user base would rather see that engineering time go into core printer quality and support.
What’s still missing
Essentially everything that decides whether the R1 matters: laser type and power, bed size, whether it is enclosed, whether it inherits the 40W module’s air assist and flame sensor, whether it supports a rotary attachment, and the price. Until Bambu shows the machine, there is no honest way to say where it lands against the 40W module the company already sells — let alone against the rest of the market.
