A refresh, not a replacement cycle
Prusa Research announced on 12 August that it is refreshing its whole current printer range. The XL becomes the XL+, the CORE One L becomes the CORE One L+, and the CORE One+ moves to a second generation. Nothing is being retired: the Czech manufacturer is framing all three as evolutionary updates, with upgrade paths for the machines already sitting on people’s desks.
Two changes run across all three printers. The first is an integrated nozzle wiper, which cleans stray filament off the nozzle before a print starts so leftover strands and blobs don’t get dragged onto the first layer. Prusa says it was one of the most frequent community requests, and that it deliberately picked a standard, widely available wiper because the part is a consumable that will eventually wear out. The second is a new set of GT1.5 belts, which Prusa and All3DP both describe as reducing the visibility of the fine repeating patterns that show up on large, smooth vertical walls.
The XL+ gets the real overhaul
The 360 × 360 × 360 mm toolchanger sees the most substantial work. Its headline addition is a new 360-degree part-cooling system matching the MK4S and CORE One series, which Prusa says pushes more air and distributes it more evenly around the nozzle — the sort of change that shows up in overhangs, bridges and small details rather than in a spec sheet.
The other significant XL+ change is a new Tool Offset Sensor, borrowed from the INDX programme. It is a permanently mounted eddy-current sensor that measures and aligns every toolhead during initial setup, replacing a calibration routine that used a removable pin and took several minutes. Prusa claims the new process is roughly 20 times faster, and says the sensor is compatible with the Silicone toolhead scheduled for this autumn.
High-flow nozzles are now standard on the XL+, and the machine is rated for chamber temperatures up to 60 °C. The redesigned enclosure is better sealed and reaches roughly 50 °C on the printer’s own waste heat; getting to 60 °C requires a chamber heater that Prusa has shown but has not given a shipping date for.
The CORE One changes are mostly about waiting less
The CORE One+ (Gen 2) picks up the belts and the wiper, plus a redesigned heatbed mounting that lets the bed warm up and stay flat without the extra pause. For PLA, PETG and anything else printed at a bed temperature of 85 °C or lower, the “absorbing heat” step disappears entirely, and higher-temperature materials start sooner too. It also inherits the snap-on top panel from the larger CORE One L, which comes off in seconds without tools, over a sturdier automatic top-vent mechanism.
The CORE One L+ — 300 × 300 × 330 mm, actively controlled chamber, large all-aluminium AC heatbed — gets the lighter touch, since much of what is being back-ported to the smaller model originated there. Its additions are the shared GT1.5 belts and the nozzle wiper.
Same prices, and kits for machines already sold
Prusa says the refreshed lineup went on sale immediately at unchanged prices, including the CORE One+ kit and every XL+ toolhead configuration. Assembled CORE One+ (Gen 2) and CORE One L+ machines started shipping right away, with assembled XL+ printers following later in August.
Anyone with an unshipped order for an XL, CORE One L or CORE One+ has it automatically switched to the corresponding new version, regardless of when the order was placed. Upgrade kits and individual parts roll out over the following weeks: CORE One+ upgrades first, then CORE One L+ and XL+ around the end of August and the beginning of September.
What is queued behind the hardware
The refresh arrived alongside a roadmap. The first INDX automatic toolchanger units for the CORE One+ are close to shipping and are fully compatible with Gen 2 machines — Prusa told customers with an INDX kit already on order to hold off on buying the Gen 2 upgrade until a fuller INDX update lands. INDX is also being tested on the CORE One L.
In software and firmware: PrusaSlicer 3.0 has its first alpha due within weeks; the HT Hotend for high-temperature engineering filaments arrives in September for the CORE One and CORE One L families; and Prusa Connect Local, a from-scratch replacement for PrusaLink that runs entirely over the local network with no cloud connection, is heading into early access. There is also an automatic Pressure Advance system in testing that uses the load cell to characterise each spool before every print, replacing a single fixed value with a model that adjusts as flow rate changes.
Why it matters
The interesting part is not any single feature. It is the shape of the release. A nozzle wiper and a belt revision are exactly the kind of changes that would normally arrive stapled to a new model number and a higher price. Prusa is charging the same and selling upgrade kits instead, which is a slower way to run a hardware business and a much better one to be on the owning end of — a two-year-old CORE One does not lose a chunk of its value every August.
The open question is whether the individual gains justify a kit purchase for people who already own these machines. Faster print starts and less visible surface banding are real, but they are also the sort of improvement that reads better in a changelog than it feels in a print queue. The first independent tests have not landed yet. Until they do, the safest read is that this is a good time to buy a Prusa and a wait-and-see moment if you already own one.
